Origins;
Born with the red-on-black eyes of an obvious mutant, Remy was orphaned at birth by a mother who wanted nothing to do with his condition. Given over to the care of a New Orleans orphanage by the hospital where he was abandoned, his stay with the nuns proved a short one when a man known as Antiquary--a 'collector' of children--found him. Remy was living with Antiquary, hardly more than a prize in a prison, when Jean-Luc LeBeau made a trip to the man's house and saw the child. Unable to stand the thought of the boy growing up in a cage, Jean-Luc smuggled him away and gave him to a street gang of pickpockets to raise.
By the time he was nine, Remy had managed to become a considerable talent at stealing. Jean-Luc, who had watched him grow over the years, formally adopted the boy into the LeBeau family and the Thieves' Guild--of which he was the head. From then on the Guild took over Remy's training, who learned at the side of his step-brother Henri and his new cousin, Etienne. The three of them together became the best that the Guild had to offer.
There was one other constant presence in his new life--Bella Donna Boudreaux. Bella was the daughter of the head of the Assassins' Guild, rivals of the Thieves. She and Remy met in secret and began what would prove to be a Romeo and Juliet romance.
At fifteen, Remy agreed to be his cousin's advisor on the ritual that would make Etienne a full member of the Guild. They were sent on a job to Spain to steal from the immortal Chandra but the job went bad and both boys were captured and sent to a slaver. It was there where Remy's mutant powers fully manifested and, charging a card stolen from their captors, Remy managed to break he and his cousin out of holding. An easy escape was not in the cards, however, and Etienne died.
It was not to be the last tragedy of Remy's young career. His own first full-fledged steal for the Guild brought him face-to-face with Sabretooth, who had been hired to steal the same necklace as Remy. Remy had seduced--and been seduced--by the young owner of the jewels and was forced to choose between her and his brother in a rooftop confrontation with the feral mutant. Remy gave Sabretooth the jewels in return for their lives but was tricked; Sabretooth dropped both Henri and Genevive. Remy chose Henri but would never forgive or forget Sabretooth.
Eventually Bella Donna consented to marry Remy; their union was to mark the merging of the waring Guilds and sealing of a peace between them. It was Bella's brother Julien who opposed and challenged Remy to a duel just days after they became man and wife. Julien was killed and Remy excommunicated from the Thieves' Guild. Forced to flee New Orleans in order to prevent an all-out war between the Guilds, Remy refused to let Bella follow him. He could not ask her to leave all that she knew for a life of ostracism.
He roamed the world for years, finding employment for his skills as a thief as well as his mutant abilities. Slowly, however, his mutation was growing beyond his control. It finally forced Remy to seek out a solution--a mutant geneticist named Mr Sinister. Sinister performed a surgery that would keep his powers at a manageable level and let Remy learn to control them completely. In return Remy agreed to work for Sinister. This bargain led him back to Sabretooth, who was already in Sinister's employ, and the leading of a group called the Marauders. They were assigned to a mission that took them down into the sewers where a society of disfigured mutants called the Morlocks were thriving--the orders given turned out to be the annihilation of the group. Remy could only watch as Sabretooth and the other Marauders massacred everyone; he managed to save one small girl by smuggling her away with him as he ran. He fled Sinister and the Marauders, sickened and guilty for what he had been a part of, and determined that no one would ever know. To add insult to injury it was not long afterward that Remy found out his wife, Bella Donna, had died.
Remy had become distrustful of mutant organizations because of the Marauders incident, but he was also lonely and for the first time since leaving New Orleans, feeling isolated. Perhaps that was the real reason why when he was found by a recruiting Emma Frost, Remy accepted the offer made to join the Hellions, telling himself that his position would be conditional and full acceptance would come only after a trial period.
Remy took on the pseudonym Gambit and joined the Hellions. Time would tell.
Powers;
Remy has the mutant ability to tap into the potential energy contained within an object and transform it into kinetic energy upon touching it. When Remy thus charges an object and throws it at a target, the object releases this energy explosively on impact. He is unable to use this power to charge living objects.
Remy's ability to tap energy also grants him superhuman agility and dexterity, as well as creating a static interference that shields his mind from detection and intrusion by even the most powerful telepaths.
Remy also possesses a hypnotic charm that allows him to exert a subtle influence over any sentient mind. This power allows him to compel others to believe what he says and agree with anything he suggests. More powerful minds, however, have proven immune to Remy's charm.
Abilities;
Remy possesses the ability to throw small objects--including but not limited to knives, throwing spikes, and playing cards--with extraordinary accuracy. He is also a skilled duelist and fencer and is bilingual in English and French.
Other accoutrement;
Remy often carries a telescopic bo staff on his person, as well as a pack of playing cards for charging.
Personality;
Confident to the point of some arrogance, Remy often hides himself behind a witty remark or a playful jest instead of conceding to the seriousness of a situation. He is always ready for a good time, a game of cards or pool, a spar, a romp in the sheets; Remy will easily come off as shallow to the common observer but there is a deep well of passionate emotion under his thick veneer and he rarely does anything by halves.
Hardly an 'ends justify the means' type of person, Remy is more likely to focus on the here and now than any eventual outcome that his actions may have. He is a private pessimist but a public optimist; Remy doesn't unburden his own worries on others. If necessary, he will break rules to avoid dragging other people into his problems; his own past and burdens are things kept deep under his shallow exterior. In fact, Remy is more than close-lipped about his origins--he is absolutely mum.
This incarnation of Remy LeBeau is for The Hellions and is played by Ben Barnes. I own neither the character nor the face.
